Steps To Obtain Your Alberta Security License

As you begin your onboarding process, it is important to start the process of obtaining your Alberta Security License immediately, as it is a condition of your employment and it takes time to complete. This page outlines the steps and important details to help you get started and guide you through the process. Please review the information below and ensure all requirements are completed promptly.

  • Deadline: Proof of enrolment must be submitted to Spillett before your first shift.

  • A valid criminal record check with a vulnerable sector search and local police database search is required to begin your role. Please note:

    • Start Immediately: Do not wait until after completing the ABST course to begin the criminal record check process. As soon as you start the ABST course, visit your local RCMP station to obtain your criminal record check. This ensures both processes can run in parallel and minimizes delays.

    • Submission: Submit your criminal record check to Spillett Security as soon as you receive it, even if you have not yet finished the ABST course. This ensures we can process it promptly and avoid delays in your onboarding process. You can email it to info@spillettsecurity.ca

    • Validity: The record check is valid for 90 days. To avoid needing another check, ensure that you complete the ABST course promptly so that your record check remains valid when you apply for your license. Spillett will only reimburse the cost of one check unless under exceptional circumstances.

    • Cost: $35 (subject to change).

    Steps to Obtain:

    1. Visit your local RCMP station:

      • Banff: 335 Lynx St, Banff, AB T1L 1K3

      • Canmore: 101 Elk Run Blvd, Canmore, AB T1W 1L1

    2. Request a criminal record check with:

      • Vulnerable sector search.

      • Local police database search.

      • Indicate that the check is for a ‘security services’ job.

      • Print/mail copy of results for your application.

  • You will need the following documents to apply for your Alberta Security License:

    • Criminal Record Check: Ensure it is valid and current.

    • Passport Photo: Must be date-stamped and valid within 90 days.

    • Government-Issued ID: Photocopy of Canadian driver’s license or passport.

    • ABST Certificate: Proof of course completion.

    • Application Forms: Fill out the forms available under the "Apply for or Renew Your License" section here: License Application Forms.

  • Recommended Method: Visit an approved registry office to submit your application in person. This ensures your application is complete and reduces delays. If your application is approved, you will receive a temporary license valid for 60 days.

    • Closest Registry:

      • North Hill Shopping Center

      • 1841-1632 14 Avenue NW

      • Calgary, Alberta T2N 1M7

    • Cost: Approximately $109 (subject to change).

    • Other Registries: Find additional approved locations here: Approved Registries.

Mailing Option: While mailing is possible, it may cause significant delays if corrections are required. For faster processing, we strongly recommend in-person submission.  Delays in obtaining your license may compromise your continued employment with Spillett Security.
